Weaning from breast to bottle
Information on how to wean from breast to bottle.
A Guide for Weaning from breast to bottle
- Breast is best but ultimately it is a mother’s choice as to how to feed her baby.
- Weaning needs to be gradual as this will reduce the risk of mastitis and blocked ducts - you may get lumpy breasts for 5-10 days - if a lump is sore this may indicate a blocked duct or the start of mastitis
- If this happens try to massage the lumps during a breastfeed or express a small amount of milk for comfort if baby is due to have a bottle
- If you develop flu-like symptoms and/or red areas on the breast you will require a GP review
Below is a Guide from Robyn Barker's "Baby Love" book
- Each stage on the table below is increasing in the number breastfeeds dropped
- You can drop a feed every few days or every week
- How quickly you drop feeds will depend on your comfort level
- Express just enough for comfort, if you express too much supply will take longer to wean
